If you had a layer set to not visible and then selected it (intentionally, or using "auto-select layer"), then the entire list would be greyed out. One of the bad things about converting from RGB mode to CMYK mode (under the Image menu) is that many of Photoshop’s coolest filters can only be applied in RGB mode, and once you’re in CMYK mode, many of them are grayed out in the Filter menu, so they can’t be accessed. If you try to sort a range of cells that are partially within a table and partially outside a table, you’ll find that the Sort and Filter options are grayed-out and unusable, even though the cells might look completely ordinary! The only way to tell for certain if a cell is contained within a Table is to click on it and look at the Ribbon. Also noticed that if you change back to 16-bit after using one of the grayed out filters, the change I made still 'sticks.'
